WHERE AND WHAT?

I’m originally from Australia, but now I live in Düsseldorf and work at our headquarters in Köln.
I work in the FPGA team as a development intern, day to day I tend to get to work on non-core projects and features mostly independently and do a lot of testing.
The team is very close and casual, really quick to help each other out and a focus on getting things done, it’s a great environment to learn things in.

BEST THING ABOUT SILEXICA?

It’s a really exible work environment, it doesn’t matter if I’m working from home, the ofce, a cafe, on the train, at 2pm or 2am, as long as responsibilities are met, and the work gets done Silexica respects our preferences and workstyle. Despite this freedom they make it really easy and welcoming to be in the ofce as well, with open plan areas, friendly people, and free food and drinks.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I don’t have family in Germany, but I have built my own little hippie family with a mix of unicycling, bouldering and slacklining. If we aren’t off doing some weird sport I am probably cooking, playing cards or inventing a new cocktail idea.

BEST DEVELOPMENTS SINCE YOU JOINED?

Since I came here there have been a few big changes in Silexica, the product focus has shifted, the development teams have experienced splits and minor re-organizations. Policy around meetings, code requirements and the provision of information internal and external to the teams have all been modied to a greater or lesser degree.

ADVICE TO FUTURE SILEXICANS?

No matter how stressed you are about that exam coming up, as long as you pass, internships will be the most important, and most educational thing you do during your studies.
If you can do more, throw yourself into them, learn what you can, and make friends every chance you can get, there is simply no substitute for on the job experience, and internships are the lowest pressure opportunity you will ever get.
