WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

Born to Thai and Belgian parents, I spent a large part of my life living in Nigeria in a multicultural environment. Having lived the last eight years in Cologne as both a student and a professional designer, I believe that Cologne is the best city for a designer to work in and unfold one’s full creative potential. Cologne has recently been the center of the international design scene due to the ongoing evolving creative economy that is accommodated by local events, fairs, and new educational opportunities that attract design enthusiasts from all over the world. In the Barthonia Forum in the design hotspot Ehrenfeld, for example, DESIGNERS FAIR offers young, freelance designers a platform for their work exhibition. Other examples of events and faculties are the Cologne Design Conference, UX CGN, the IMM Cologne, KISD University, or Macromedia University. So there is quite a lot to discover!

Equipped with “all-round “abilities, my work as a Designer at Silexica currently consists of everyday operational tasks creating visual content/assets/marketing collateral, maintaining and improving the company’s online presence, and taking responsibility for all design-related company topics. Furthermore, I explore different tools and ways to modernize the company’s collaborative workflow for better design management.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK AT SILEXICA?

Working at Silexica allows me to be part of a team that shares the same vision and goal as I do. Growing and learning from others is a part of my personality, which I can integrate into my day-to-day work. I get to meet so many talented people from different nationalities and cultures, making me feel comfortable in my work environment. Apart from that, Silexica offers additional amenities, such as daily lunch, a Fitness subsidy, and a KVB Jobticket, making my job even more enjoyable.

The most important reason for me working at Silexica is that I am convinced of its success and the hard effort the whole team puts into the product.

HOW WAS YOUR FIRST WEEK? WHAT DID YOU DO, EXPERIENCE AND LEARN?

During my first week at Silexica, I attended many onboarding meetings where I got to know the team, understand the company’s organizational structure, and gain insight into all the tools and design structures that designers have at their disposal. For a designer who had never been in the tech and software industry, the onboarding process was educational and revealing. Meeting new people at Silexica made me understand how open and honest everyone at the company is. Every opinion and idea is welcome, and everyone is treated fairly and respectfully; also interns are spoken to on an equal footing compared to design agencies.

One of the main challenges I encountered was understanding and adapting myself to an existing design structure spanning across different platforms and tools, revising the system, and recreating them into a more manageable infrastructure. The process simplifies everything for me, but it offers a more approachable design management system in the long term for the whole company.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO MOST IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS?

I aim to improve my workflow and my knowledge about particular industries that the company is currently in, as well as prepare new design libraries and lists of goals and tasks that I will work on in 2021. This will help me accommodate the upcoming workload in the next quarter, especially when I start working on the product UI with the other teams.

Due to Covid-19, I haven’t had the opportunity to meet all my new co-workers, which is why I’m looking forward to the end of the pandemic and being able to do team building events again. My goal is to make Silexica grow by translating its core values into a visual identity, both internally and externally, thus shaping a better comprehension of the company culture, providing services and products for the users and customers.
