Let’s meet Clémence, who is our DevOps Intern and find out why she compares her job to treasure hunting.
WHERE AND WHAT?
I currently live in Cologne very close to our headquarters where I can easily go by foot. However, I come from Paris, France, and I will go back there at the end of my internship to finish my studies. As part of the DevOps team, I support developers in their day-to-day work. Our main objective is to make sure that the product always reacts as expected. To do so, we develop processes to continuously evaluate the proper functioning and performances of Silexica products. I am especially proud of the current refactoring I am doing on the whole pipeline. It helps to have even more reliable processes, and it prepares the ground for a future migration to the cloud. It is a huge job which enables us to rethink our processes and improve them drastically.
BEST THING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I love solving problems. When something is not working–which happens approximately 156 times a day–I get really excited to find the root cause. I see it like a treasure hunt, and I really like finding the treasure. Then I realize that with the treasure comes a new map! And I start again searching for the next treasure.
BEST DEVELOPMENTS SINCE YOU JOINED?
The company changes every day in a subtle way because people regularly question themselves and their work. Everyone aims at having better coordination, better processes, better results, better code. What I find amazing with Silexica is that nothing is fixed for eternity and there is always room for discussion and therefore improvements.
HOW DO YOU EXPERIENCE OUR VALUES (TEAM, INNOVATION, CUSTOMER ORIENTATION) IN YOUR DAILY WORK LIFE?
As an intern, I really appreciate being considered as a real part of the team and taking part in every discussion. I also enjoy a lot the general benevolence and listening of all Silexicans. With regard to innovation, it is really nice to see my own ideas being listened to, discussed, and, finally, integrated as new features. I am encouraged to take part in innovation as everyone else.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM OR PLACE IN THE OFFICE?
I would say the kitchen. Obviously because it is where we eat, and eating is really important, but also because it is where we usually can talk with each other about the most random subjects from Moroccan coffee machines to a movie about a killer tire!
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU HADN’T BECOME A ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL?
As I still have studies to finish, the most likely answer is that I would still be studying. But maybe if I hadn’t found this interest for computer science, I would have dropped them and become a holiday camp organizer to create treasure hunts for children!
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
I am fond of climbing and running. I like spending time outside and discovering nice landscapes. In summer, I organize camps for children and I spend a lot of time creating amazing games. I am also learning German from scratch, as I didn’t know a single word before being hired at Silexica!
ADVICE TO FUTURE INTERNS?
Don’t censor yourself. It is not because you are not familiar with some technology that you won’t be able to learn it and do great things with it. And choose your company for the people because everything becomes possible with the right team.
