“We have people from all around the world who are brilliant both at work and telling jokes”, says our Taiwan-based FAE Chun-Kai Chou. Read more about his perspectives working remotely for a German software company in our latest HR blog.
WHERE AND WHAT?
I was in Cologne and worked at Silexica HQ for the first 5 months. Now I live in Taipei, Taiwan and work remotely from home (or sometimes coffee shops). I was originally hired as a developer. But since I am now located in Taiwan, besides product development, I also spend some time working as FAE for (potential) customers in Asia.
BEST DEVELOPMENTS SINCE YOU JOINED?
As one of the Chinese speaking engineers in the company, I am very happy that I could help in many ways in the business with customers from China. For collaboration with Huawei, communication was much more efficient since we are speaking the same language. We now know exactly what the customer needs, and our team can definitely provide solutions for them.
ADVICE TO FUTURE SILEXICANS?
German companies were usually considered to be cold, disciplined, and humorless. But I would say German software start-ups are definitely in a different world. We have people from all around the world who are brilliant both at work and talking jokes. There are also endless team events (and beers). I really enjoy working here even though I can barely speak any German. German software start-ups are like hidden gems for career seekers in Taiwan. There are not many discussions about them. I sincerely suggest taking a look at the start-ups from Germany. They are definitely worth to be considered.
BEST THING ABOUT SILEXICA?
To me, the most amazing thing in Silexica is having the opportunity to work with the most talented people from so many different countries/cultures. It really opens my mind not only in the technical knowledge but also in the lifestyles. I thought I was joining a small Germany start-up, but it turns out to be an international team. I am also surprised by how flexible the Silexica team can be. Being a programmer who also likes customer engagement, I can never imagine that Silexica could fulfill my both wishes by allowing me working fulltime remotely from Taiwan. Also, due to the well prepared DevOps infrastructure and Scrum process, I can keep up the pace with the developers in Cologne even though I am in the different timezone.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
I play (a lot of) games with my friends after work. And I usually spend my vacation traveling, seeking for tasty foods and spectacular nature scenes.
